As the Asian art market is thriving, so is the art fair business. After buying off Art HK (Art Basel Hong Kong) from the founders Sandy Angus of Angus Montgomery Arts and Tim Etchells, the Swiss MCH group Art Basel franchise owners and the art dealers are joining forces again to launch Art SG, the next big South East Asia art fair in Singapore. Art SG will debut in November 2019 and is set to attract more than 80 regional and global galleries.

As the summer keeps getting hotter, so is the China-US trade war. The Trump administration has threatened to add art and antiques items to the growing 10% tariff list. Asian art dealers have expressed their concerns and called for the public to share their opinions over the decision before the tariffs public hearing on 17 August. Paintings and antiques account for hundreds of millions of dollars every year in between the two countries. According to Asian art dealers, there is already enough strain placed on cultural objects in China, as any antiques dated before 1949 cannot leave the country without special permits. If the 10% tariff on Chinese art and antiques is effectively implemented, it will undoubtedly affect the market.

Earlier this month, while Sotheby’s had a lucrative Old Master sale with a total of £35.2m (£42.6m with fees), Christie’s failed to meet their low estimates with a total of £25.8m (£31.1m with fees)。 The biggest disappointment for Christie’s was the failure to sell Rubens’ Portrait of Clara Serena, which had only recently been reattributed to the painter after being deaccessioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2013. It shows that collectors may still have their doubts over the origin of the painting. Prior to the auction at Sotheby’s, fashion designer Victoria Beckham had personally selected a few of the portraits and hung them around her Mayfair flagship store, which definitely brought positive attention to the auction sale.

It is not news that women are underrepresented in art, let alone museums. This month the National Gallery in London acquired Artemisia Gentileschi’s Self Portrait as St. Catherine of Alexandria for 3.6 million pounds. Hailed as a prodigy of her time, Artemisia Gentilleschi is the most renowned female artist of the Italian Baroque. In a press release, the National Gallery emphasized on the importance of representing women artists in regard to the story of women in art history. Artemisia Gentileschi was the first woman to become a member of the Accademia del Disegno in Florence, and received commissions from prominent public figures such as the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Charles I of England, and Philip IV of Spain.

The world’s first Alberto Giacometti Institute opened its doors on the 26 of June 2018 in Paris. Catherine Grenier, director of the foundation and former co-director of the Centre Pompidou, revealed that the project began in 2014 when she discovered the sensational collection in storage. The 350 sculptures, 90 paintings, and over 2,000 drawings will finally have a home to introduce and preserve the Swiss artist’s incredible legacy.
阿尔贝托•贾科梅蒂研究所于今年6月26号在巴黎剪彩。蓬皮杜中心的前负责人、贾科梅蒂基金会理事卡瑟琳娜•格雷涅尔女士透露,她在2014年发现了这些惊人的藏品后开始策划这个项目。这位瑞士艺术家留下的350座雕塑,90张油画,以及2000多张素描现在终于有了一个属于自己的家,得以妥善保存和流传后世。

In Belgium, the Flemish tourist board has issued a video to address the recent Facebook censorship over their promotion of Flemish masters due to the feature of nudes in the paintings of Baroque painters. In the sequence, the police walks among visitors of a museum inquiring whether they have a social media account and then ushers them away from the paintings. With no less humor, the Flemish tourist board asked Mark Zuckerberg to rethink this decision in an open letter signed by most museums of Flanders. The Flemish museums called the censorship a hindrance to their cultural heritage as they are currently promoting Flemish paintings by the likes of Rubens, Pieter Bruegel and Jan van Eyck. Facebook answered that it will not prohibit any of the paintings on normal posts, and is open to discussion. However the promotion might still be an issue as Facebook has a strict policy against any sexually oriented content, including artistic or educational nudes, apart from statues.

The Scream by Edvard Munch has long been described as the expression of inner turmoil. However, a recent collaboration of meteorologists with art historians has revealed that perhaps the skies depicted by Munch were not as surreal as thought, but instead illustrated a realistic perception of unusual meteorological conditions at that time. According to the study, nacreous or “mother of pearl” clouds, give skies a hazy rich colored texture similar to the ones in Munch’s painting. Likewise, records prove that the volcano Krakatau was in eruption at that time which would explain why the protagonist is covering his ears. Hence, when Munch wrote that the sky was screaming blood and fire, he may have meant literally.

Almost 100 years later, Claude Monet’s Japanese glazed biscuit pottery cat is finally returning home after a quick stop at Christie’s in Hong Kong. Art historians recently discovered that Monet’s late son, Michel, had an illegitimate daughter, Rolande Verneiges, to whom he had bequeathed some of the artist’s paintings, personal belongings, and collection of Japanese art. The family decided to sell the treasured heirlooms in Hong Kong last autumn. Amidst the total sale of HK$85.5m (US$10.9m), the mid-19th-century cat sold for HK$525,000, (US$67,000), in other words 20 times its low estimate. Thanks to Japanese art and coin dealer Hideyuki Wada who immediately donated it to the Fondation Claude Monet, visitors will have the pleasure to discover Monet’s cat in Giverny.
克劳德•莫奈的日式釉瓷小猫摆件在经历了仅百年的跌宕流离后终于物归原主。艺术史学家发现莫奈已故的儿子迈克尔将画家的一些画作和私人物品,以及画家生前收藏的日本艺术品作为遗赠,留给了自己的私生女罗朗德•韦尔内热。韦尔内热一家去年秋季在香港出售这些珍贵的遗产。拍卖总成交价达到8,550万港币(相当于1,090万美元),其中这只19世纪的小瓷猫成交价为52.5万港币(相当于67,000美元),相当于其最低估值的20倍左右。日本艺术品经销商买下这件瓷器后立刻捐赠给了克劳德•莫奈基金会,游客因此有幸在莫奈的故乡吉维尼一睹小猫的真容。
